The rates here are the European Central Bank's daily reference rates via the Frankfurter API — the mid-market rate halfway between global buy and sell prices, the benchmark journalists quote and every provider marks up. It's the fair-value number for converting a foreign salary, price or invoice in your head.
Every real-world exchange adds a margin to mid-market: typically 1.5–3% on card transactions, more at airport desks, and 'commission-free' bureaus bury the fee in the rate itself. Two defences work everywhere: compare any quote against the mid-market figure here, and when a foreign card terminal offers to charge in your home currency, always decline — that 'convenience' (dynamic currency conversion) carries the worst rate in travel.
